Photographer Saburo Gotoda's photobook ‘Silent Camera / Chameleon 1979-1982’. After graduating from Tama Art University's Photography Department in 1980, he held exhibitions nationwide. In 1989, his second photobook ‘Theft, Dreams, and Photography: 1977-1988’ won the 39th Japan Photographic Society Newcomer Award. Despite suffering hearing impairment from drug-related harm in childhood, Goto never let this handicap hold him back. With his exceptional camera eye, he consistently captured numerous unique snaps without cropping. This book is his first photobook, published in 1983. Within a single photograph, multiple gazes are woven together rather than a single viewpoint, highlighting the depth of his work. Furthermore, the fact that he captured them without cropping demonstrates the photographer's exceptional technical skill. The title reflects the affinity between the “soundless” photographic plates and his own “soundless” life. In an instant, Goto Sanro masterfully expresses this multifaceted world—a world only possible through photography, imperceptible to the naked eye—and speaks volumes to us.
