Vathek van William Beckford is een fascinerend werk dat zijn stempel heeft gedrukt op de gothic en fantastische literatuur. De uitgave van 1837 is bijzonder omdat het een eerste druk is van dit oorspronkelijk in het Frans geschreven verhaal uit 1786.

Deze uitgave is een van de vroegste Nederlandse vertalingen van Beckfords gothic meesterwerk. Het werd in 1838 besproken in het literaire tijdschrift De Gids, waarin men de vertaling roemde om haar exotische sfeer en getrouwe weergave van Beckfords stijl.

•	Verhaal: Het volgt de decadente kalief Vathek, die geobsedeerd raakt door bovennatuurlijke macht en onsterfelijkheid. Zijn zoektocht leidt hem naar duistere oorden, waaronder het ondergrondse paleis van Eblis, waar hij uiteindelijk wordt gestraft voor zijn hoogmoed en zonden.

Deze editie is vaak geassocieerd met de Engelse vertaling en heruitgave die het werk toegankelijk maakte voor een breder publiek. Het werd toen ook voorzien van een inleiding of commentaar door latere redacteuren, zoals J.G. Lockhart, die het werk in de context plaatste van de romantische en gothic traditie.
Culturele impact
•	Vathek beïnvloedde schrijvers als Edgar Allan Poe en H.P. Lovecraft.
•	Het wordt gezien als een brug tussen de gothic roman en de latere horror- en fantasytradities.
