Islamic Gold Ring with Venetian Murrina – Ottoman Period, 16th–17th Century

An exceptional Islamic gold ring from the Ottoman period, dating to the 16th–17th century, possibly from the Balkan regions under Ottoman rule. The ring is crafted in 12-karat gold and weighs 7.7 grams. It features an inlaid piece of Venetian murrina glass in deep black, displaying concentric yellow and white circular patterns—an exquisite example of Murano craftsmanship appreciated across Mediterranean and Islamic courts.

Measuring 28 × 20 × 14 mm and approximately ring size 14 (EU 54), the piece reflects the intercultural aesthetic preferences of high-ranking individuals within the Ottoman elite. The bezel is richly decorated with geometric motifs and relief-carved medallions on each shoulder. One side bears what appears to be a worn crest or noble emblem, indicating the ring may have served both as an adornment and a personal seal.

The inner surface of the bezel exhibits engraved designs, possibly talismanic or calligraphic in nature, in keeping with Islamic artistic traditions. The fusion of Islamic goldsmithing techniques with imported Venetian glass suggests the ring belonged to a noble or high-status figure with a taste for luxury and transregional artistry.
