This volume contains the classic Japanese folk tale Urashima, The Fisher-Boy (Urashima Tarō), presented in English translation by the renowned Japanologist Basil Hall Chamberlain. It tells the story of the fisherman who rescues a turtle and is rewarded with a journey to the undersea Dragon Palace, only to discover upon his return that centuries have passed in the human world. The narrative is accompanied by vivid color illustrations, typical of Hasegawa’s crepe-paper editions, which were specifically created to introduce Japanese fairy tales to a Western audience in the late 19th century.

Rarity
This book is part of the famous Japanese Fairy Tale Series published by Takejirō Hasegawa (Kobunsha) in Tokyo. These crepe-paper editions are now highly sought after by collectors due to their fragile production method and limited survival rate. Early numbers of the series, such as Urashima (No. 8, first issued in 1886), are particularly rare and represent a significant piece of Meiji-era cultural history and cross-cultural publishing.
