Hiroshima / Hiroshima, a photobook by Ishiuchi Miyako, one of Japan's leading female photographers.

Having studied weaving at Tama Art University, Ishiuchi began photographing independently in 1975. She gained attention for her coarse-grained monochrome photographs depicting Yokosuka, where she spent her adolescence, and former red-light districts across Japan.

Since the 1990s, she has energetically pursued close-up creations exploring bodies that bear the marks of time and memory, such as “1·9·4·7” and “MOTHERS”.
This book features photographs taken in 2007 of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum's collection of “personal effects” – clothing, jewellery, and other items that came into direct contact with the skin – belonging to atomic bomb survivors.

Tsuchida Hiromi similarly photographed such relics, but Ishii reportedly hesitated when commissioned, given the theme of Hiroshima and the atomic bomb being continuously photographed by many photographers. However, upon first visiting Hiroshima and touching the remaining relics, he was captivated not only by the destructive imagery but also by the beauty and fashion sense evident in the clothing.

This collection of photographs conveys that, despite the weight of history, people at that time naturally enjoyed fashion and had the everyday lives that supported it.
