Inscribed on flyleaves “A[gnes] Briggs, May 1873.” *the proper v.III is missing, being replaced with an extract (unacknowledged) from vol.II (pp.i-iv, 1-194) of the version published by Jones & Co. in 1831, complete with some of the Cruikshank illustrations and providing the text needed to link vols.II and IV. All 4 vols. are in a uniform binding and similarly inscribed, so the substitution for the missing vol.III must date from no later than 1873.
