Description from the seller
This Beetle is being auctioned without a reserve price!
That means the highest bidder will become the owner of this beautiful vehicle!
GENERAL:
For sale: an exceptionally special Volkswagen Beetle Oval from 1953.
Why special? On March 10, 1953, the very first Oval Beetle was sold, and this car, with a production date of March 20, belongs to the very early examples.
Based on the chassis number, we dare say that this may be the oldest known Oval Beetle in the world! We, at least, have never encountered an older one.
This car has been fully and lovingly restored in the Netherlands. It is in fantastic condition and combines absolute rarity with superb craftsmanship.
BODYWORK & PAINTWORK:
The body has been fully body-off restored: the shell and floor have been separated, tackled in detail and rebuilt.
The car is finished in the original, stunning Atlantic Green (L19) color, which perfectly highlights the classic design.
The result is a sleek, fresh Beetle that has preserved its original character.
TECHNICAL:
Under the hood lies an 1100cc engine with 25 hp, the same engine as in the “bril-Beetle,” which gives this Oval the classic “Beetle sound” up to the last cars.
What makes this model even more attractive: the Oval’s gearbox was factory-synchronized, making gear changes much smoother than its predecessor.
A wonderful mix of classic driving and practical convenience.
INTERIOR:
The interior has also been completely overhauled during restoration, while preserving the original look.
Meticulous to the last detail, so you feel as if you are in 1953 as soon as you step in.
Clean, classic and authentic: the interior suits the look of this special Oval perfectly.
DOCUMENTS:
The car comes with an extensive documentation folder, including:
Appraisal report from a recognized appraisal firm dated 2024 with a value of €40,000!!!!
The original delivery certificate from 1953
An official birth certificate from the Volkswagen Museum.
Invoices and documentation of the restoration carried out in the Netherlands
This unique set of documents makes this example not only a joy to drive, but also a valuable piece of history for the collector.
A unique opportunity to acquire a very early Volkswagen Oval, probably the oldest known in the world!
If we look very closely, we see a small imperfection in the front hood on the side.
Complete, restored and documented. An icon 70 years old, ready for the future.
An ideal car as an investment and for a collection or for a museum.
When sold outside the Netherlands, this car will be supplied with the proper export documents. Transport to your address is possible!

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
