Russian icon with silver basma — Saints Luke and Maurice

Origin: Central Russia
Date: first half of the 19th century (painting); silver basma second half of the 19th century

This small travel icon unites two highly unusual figures in Russian iconography.
Saint Luke, author of the Gospel and considered the first icon painter, is shown holding the Gospel and a painted panel. Beside him appears Saint Maurice, a Nubian soldier and martyr, rarely depicted in Orthodox art but highly venerated in the West.

Saint Luke the Evangelist is traditionally depicted holding the Gospel, as he is considered its first author. He is also regarded as the patron saint of doctors (as “the beloved physician”) and of painters, since medieval tradition attributes to him the first painted image of the Virgin.

Saint Maurice, commander of the Theban Legion and martyr, is shown with a lance, symbol of his role as a soldier. While especially venerated in Western Christianity, he is honored as a protector of justice, loyalty, and communities in times of strife.

Above them, the Mandylion — the Holy Face of Christ “not made by hands” — sanctifies their witness.
The gilded background and silver basma with authentic hallmarks (84 zolotniki) give this piece both devotional strength and refined artistry.

The rare juxtaposition of Luke and Maurice makes this icon unique, bridging Eastern and Western traditions.

The association of these two saints on the same panel is unusual and therefore of particular interest: it unites the figure of the healer and creator of images with that of the defender and witness of faith, giving the icon both artistic and protective significance.
