Een lang uitgestorven apex roofdier, in feite was de Platecarpus zo'n intens roofdier, als hij nog steeds onze oceanen zou zwemmen, zou de megalodon misschien nooit hebben bestaan! Deze nachtmerrieachtige zeedieren waren eigenlijk gigantische hagedissen die enigszins leken op de landwonende Komodo-draak. Stel je een hagedismonster voor met de dubbele scharnierkaak van een slang met enorme tanden en een staart als een haai.. oh en ze kunnen wel 8 meter groot zijn (afhankelijk van de soort) ! Dus aten ze eigenlijk alles wat ze wilden (vissen, dolfijnen, walvissen, haaien, zelfs andere soortgenoten ) Fossielen van deze soort zijn gevonden op elk continent, inclusief Antarctica, bewijs dat deze hagedissenkoningen de oceaan domineerden.

De Platecarpus is een kleinere broer uit de zelfde mosasaurus familie.
