Biografie

Kees Salentijn (Amsterdam, 1947)

Salentijn volgt zijn opleiding aan de Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, afdeling vrije schilderskunst. O.B. Kat is daar zijn belangrijkste leermeester. Salentijn bestudeert in zijn studieperiode schilderijen in het Prado in Madrid en hij verblijft enige maanden bij een Berberse familie in Marokko. In de jaren tachtig reist Salentijn veel naar Spanje. Hij voelt zich in deze periode verbonden met kunstenaars van diverse stromingen, die min of meer de spontane onbewuste creatie voorstaan en niet in de eerste plaats esthetische uitbeelding nastreven. Hij combineert de vrolijke Cobra beeldtaal met de invloeden van de Spaanse cultuur. De dood van de matador Paguiri is de aanleiding voor Salentijn om zijn eerste stierengevecht- (corrida) schilderijen te maken. In 1985 brengt hij een aantal werkstukken rond dit thema samen onder de noemer Les folies dEspagne en exposeert deze in Amsterdam. Het stierengevecht is metafoor geworden voor het gevecht met het schilderij. In de late jaren tachtig bezoekt Salentijn opgravingen in Ampurias, een Grieks/Romeinse nederzetting in Spanje. Hij laat zich hierdoor inspireren in zijn werk. Hierna werkt hij wisselend in Venlo en in verschillende ateliers van vrienden in Amsterdam. Begin jaren negentig betrekt hij een atelier in de buurt van de hoofdstad en begint hij aan zijn periode van de snelle creatie. Samenhang, collage, tekening en schilderij als een doorlopende uiting van zijn creativiteit.
