SVEN MIDDELBOE ( 1910 - 2001).
Sven Middelboe originally had a vocational education, but design became his way of life – and lighting his specialty. In the late 1940s, he had his own lamp production together with the renowned designer and architect, Jørn Utzon. The collaboration between the two included, among others, the now iconic Sundowner pendant. In 1955, Middelboe was hired as an in-house designer at Nordisk Solar Co. with the aim of expanding the company's lamp production. Sven Middelboe designed lamps for several decades, and his expression and choice of materials developed with the changing trends. His early lamps were produced in either glass or metal – or a combination of the two. From the 1970s onwards, Middelboe designed a wide range of plastic lamps in modern colors. Throughout his career, Sven Middelboe continued to experiment with different shade constructions and combinations, resulting in the VERONA lamp, launched in 1968. The lamp quickly became popular, and today Verona is considered one of the most iconic pendants in Sven Middelboe's wide palette of lighting designs.
