Esemplare appartenente alla dentizione laterale superiore sinistra di Carcharodon carcharias, il grande squalo bianco, tra i predatori apicali più studiati in ambito zoologico e paleontologico. Questo dente misura 50,5 mm e presenta tutte le caratteristiche morfologiche distintive della specie.
La corona è ampia, con geometria triangolare ben equilibrata e margini interamente seghettati, dotati di dentellature regolari, funzionali alla lacerazione dei tessuti delle prede. L’apice è perfettamente conservato, con inclinazione laterale che indica la collocazione in posizione sublaterale sinistra nella mascella superiore. Lo smalto, compatto e lucente, si presenta con tonalità avorio chiaro omogeneo, privo di microfratture e con ottima brillantezza naturale.
La radice è robusta e compatta, leggermente arcuata e porosa, con struttura ben mineralizzata e tipica colorazione beige pallido. Il rapporto tra corona e radice e l’orientamento del margine distale confermano l’appartenenza al settore posteriore del gruppo laterale anteriore.
Tale dentatura rientra in una strategia alimentare altamente efficiente: Carcharodon carcharias impiega una tecnica di attacco a sorpresa, combinando una potente spinta verticale con torsione del corpo. I denti laterali come questo hanno un ruolo fondamentale nel tranciare porzioni di carne e osso con un solo morso, agendo come lame seghettate sincronizzate con il movimento rotatorio della mandibola.
Una testimonianza straordinaria della specializzazione evolutiva raggiunta da una delle più formidabili specie marine del nostro tempo.
