Famoso romanzo di Robert Smith Surtees, considerato uno dei grandi cronisti comici delle debolezze della vita di campagna; scrittore sportivo di professione, collaborava regolarmente con riviste e periodici del settore. Il suo amore per la caccia è più che mai evidente che nel gioco spensierato di "Plain or Ringlets?".  La storia ripercorre il percorso della bellissima Rosa McDermott e del carismatico John Bunting, il cui matrimonio è stato predetto dalla profezia di Gipsy. Ma l'amore e la caccia alla volpe spesso non vanno d’accordo e quando poi arriva il ricco Jasper Goldsmith a complicare le cose. Quindi, molti sono gli interrogativi: in che modo si comporterà Rosa? quale pretendente avrà il sopravvento e, naturalmente, sarà "semplice" o sarà "boccoli"?

John Leech (1817 – 1864) è stato un famoso illustratore inglese. Alcuni dei suoi lavori più riusciti sono quattro magnifiche illustrazioni per il racconto A Christmas Carol (1843) di Charles Dickens, i disegni per la Comic History of England (1847-1848) [1], e quelli per Comic History of Rome (1852). Poi, dal 1850 iniziò la produzione dei numerosi disegni di scene sportive, che contribuirono, insieme alle sue incisioni su legno, a donargli il successo e la fama.
