The age of such a stone item is difficult to determine. We think that this one is carved around the Mid-Shôwa period (Mid-20th century). It is in a very good original condition. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
The frog (kaeru) is a symbol of fertility and good fortune in Japan, and because the phrase in Japanese means "to return," frogs can be associated with things/people returning to their place of origin. They are lucky to have around because frogs promise good fortune and companions (which will eventually return) and are carried by travellers to ensure they return safely from their journeys.
