The Life and Exploits of Don Quixote de la Mancha. Translated from the Spanish of Miguel Cervantes de Saavedra (SIC), by Charles Jarvis, Esq. In two volumes. Vol. I (-Vol. II). London: Published by Jones and Co., Temple of the Muses..., 1831 Half-title: The Life and Exploits of Don Quixote de la Mancha. 2 vols. Publishers’ brown cloth with black spine labels and gold lettering. Includes a brief “Life of the Author, extracted from Don Gregorio Mayans and Siscar’s Life of Cervantes” Reprint of the version published in 1824 by Knight & Lacey, originally in 34 weekly parts, then in 2 vols. With an engraved frontispiece to vol.I (a portrait of Cervantes, ‘B. Lane sc.’), and engraved vignetted title-pages, which carry the additional rubric “Illustrated by 24 designs by Cruickshank”; the place of publication is given as “Acton Place”. The vignette (the same in each vol.) is signed ‘W.G.Knight sc.’. There are 24 woodcuts, unsigned, untitled and unnumbered, the “Directions for placing the cuts” in vol. 1 list them by numbers between 1 and 34 but give completely erroneous page numbers, and in fact they are bound in a seemingly random order, with little relevance to their subject’s actual position in the text. Publishers’ advertisement on the back of the half-title in vol.I. [Ashbee 140, Rius 679, Suñé 408, Icon449] Bindings loose.
