A well preserved manuscript miniature leaf from a Qur'an originating in the state of Bihar, India, circa 1425. It contains an elaborate illuminated marginal Juz on the front side and a well preserved juz on the rear of the folio. Allah is written in gold throughout as emphasis of the importance of Allah to the reader. 

The leaf is from the Meccan Chapter 26:105-122 (Surah Ash-Shu'ara'). The verse recounts Prophet Nuh's call to his people, where he, described as their "brother," urged them to fear God and obey him, offering no personal reward for his message. The context describes how Naoh's people, despite his plea, rejected the messengers and threatened to stone Noah's brother to death. Ultimately they were punished by God and destroyed

The folio is written the distinctive Behari script, with wide, heavy and extended horizontal lines, with thin verticals.  It contains three highly elaborate marginals running down the right margin of the scripture marking 5th divisions verses of the Chapter. The whole is framed simply in two red lines. 

This prosperous state, lying south of Nepal close bordering the Ganges river, became Muslim in the 12th century originally under the Bengal Governors.  The Muslim calligraphers developed a distinctive style of script called Bihari (after the State), characterised by wide, heavy and extended horizontal lines, and thin verticals. 

Because Bihar is a warm and humid province, manuscripts from there, do not generally keep well. This one, however, is in good condition with some minor smudging and loss of colour to the illuminations only and no signs of extensive humidity damage. As a miniature it probably came from a personal travelling Qur'an.
