Pair of Antique Brass Carriage Lanterns, Belgium, circa 1920

A rare matching pair of antique brass carriage lanterns, each embellished with ornate crowns and topped by a majestic eagle. All original glass panels remain intact — a rare survival — encasing the lanterns on five sides to shield the candle flame from wind while illuminating the road and marking the carriage’s boundaries. An air duct in the upper portion ensures optimal draft, while a hinged back panel provides access for replacing the candle. Initially candlelit, these lanterns were later adapted for carbide and kerosene.

Unlike polished examples, this pair has been preserved with a rich antique patina, enhancing their authentic period character. The survival of a complete, matched pair in this condition is especially rare, making them highly desirable for collectors, restorers, or as statement decorative pieces.

Bringing these lanterns into an interior space imparts a touch of refined elegance and royal grandeur. Timeless in design, they transcend fleeting trends and promise to grace interiors for many years to come.
