Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra - The Life & Exploits of Don Quixote de la Mancha - 1837

The Life & Exploits of Don Quixote de la Mancha. Translated from the Spanish of Miguel Cervantes de Saavedra by Charles Jarvis. Illustrated by 24 Designs by Cruickshank. London: W. Evans & Co., (1837) 2 vols. in 1 ([i-vi], vii-xxiii, [xxiv], 1-370, [i-iii], vi-xi, [xii], [i], ii-iv, [5], 6-393 pp.) front., illus. 20 x 12,5 cm. Blue cloth with printed spine label. Includes a brief “Life of the Author, extracted from "Don Gregorio Mayans y Siscar’s Life of Cervantes”. Reprint of the version published in 1824 by Knight & Lacey, originally in 34 weekly parts, then in 2 vols., and later reprinted by Jones & Co. With an engraved and vignetted title-page. Frontispiece (portrait of Cervantes) unsigned, 24 woodcuts, unsigned, untitled and unnumbered, the “Directions for placing the cuts” in vol.1 list them by numbers between 1 and 34 but give completely erroneous page numbers, and in fact they are bound in a seemingly random order, with little relevance to their subject’s actual position in the text. The British Library catalogue dates this edition to [1837], but records it with a letter- press title-page (missing from this copy) in addition to the engraved one. [Ashbee 140, Rius 679]
