Ce brûle-parfum quadripode de forme carrée aux angles arrondis repose sur quatre pieds courts et évasés. Le corps est décoré de registres d’inscriptions en caractères chinois stylisés, disposés en colonnes verticales. Les caractères évoquent des inscriptions de motifs archaïsants inspirés des bronzes rituels Shang et Zhou : lignes géométriques, frises en méandre et symboles rappelant les taotie (masques stylisés). Ce choix renvoie à la volonté des artisans de la période République de renouer avec les modèles prestigieux de l’Antiquité chinoise.

Le couvercle ajouré, orné de quatre percements nuageux (ruyi stylisés), est surmonté d’un lion de Fo (ou shishi), figure protectrice et gardienne des temples bouddhiques. Assis, la tête tournée, l’animal symbolise à la fois la vigilance, la force et la diffusion harmonieuse de l’encens dont la fumée s’échappait par les ajours.

L’ensemble témoigne de l’importance persistante des pratiques rituelles et domestiques liées à l’encens, tout en s’inscrivant dans la tradition du renouveau archaïsant propre aux arts décoratifs de la Chine du début du XXe siècle.
