Collected by myself in Ethiopia in the 90s
This exquisite headrest originates from the Jimma ethnic group who lives south-west of Addis Ababa. Its delicately curved lintel rests on an imposing conical hollow base, traditionally used to store fat for maintaining the headrest. The patina on this piece is magnificent, ranging from honey tones to a deep, almost black brown.

Headrests from the Horn of Africa were highly personal objects used daily. Today, they survive only in a few isolated regions of the continent, particularly in the area where the borders of Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan converge.
