Vincentas Gečas is one of the most prominent Lithuanian painters of the 1960s and
1970s. He graduated from the Lithuanian Institute of Art and completed an internship
in Italy in 1963–64. Starting in 1957, he taught at the Lithuanian Institute of Art,
serving as its vice-rector from 1969–74 and rector from 1974–88. He became a
professor in 1980. From 1989 to 1997, Gečas taught at Šiauliai University (formerly
Šiauliai Pedagogical Institute).

During the 1960s and 1970s, he created ideologically engaged yet plastically
suggestive works. These paintings, characterized by expressive compositions, bold
combinations of bright colors, simplified forms, and deformations with photorealistic
elements, were celebrated as innovative and relevant within the official art circles of
the Soviet Union at the time.

From a contemporary perspective, however, another part of Gečas’s oeuvre—less
prominent during his lifetime—is now seen as more compelling: his small-scale
paintings in traditional genres. These include portraits of relatives, friends, fellow
artists, and people from all walks of life, as well as street and domestic scenes, still
lifes, and landscapes. Gečas firmly believed that an artist could not overlook the
visual world around them. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he did not select
motifs simply for their aesthetic qualities or use them as a basis for formal or color
experiments. Instead, he focused on the unembellished everyday, treating it as a
reflection of the social environment.

Gečas’s talent as a draughtsman served these purposes well, but the true strength
of his work lies in his use of color. His paintings reveal his mastery of color, even
when working in monochrome, where he interprets the interplay of light and shadow 
through planes of yellow, blue, or gray. Gečas is considered one of the most talented
colorists in Lithuanian painting.

Since 1958, he participated in numerous exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad,
including Estonia, Poland, Italy, Russia, and the Netherlands. His solo exhibitions
were held in Vilnius (1967, 1981, 2006, 2013) and Moscow (1988).

His works are part of the collections of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art and
the MO Museum in Vilnius.
