Floris Jespers was een bekende Belgische avant-garde schilder. Hij werd geboren in een Antwerps kunstenaarsgezin. Zijn vader Emile Jespers was beeldhouwer. Samen met zijn oudere broer Oscar ging hij al op jonge leeftijd naar de Academie. Oscar werd beeldhouwer en Floris schilder.

Geruime tijd hadden de broers hun kost verdiend met musiceren. Ze traden op in music-halls en schouwburgen. Tijdens een van hun optredens ontmoette Floris Paul Van Ostaijen, die zijn grote vriend en bezieler zou worden. Van Ostaijen bracht hem in contact met internationale modernistische kunststromingen. De Antwerpse dichter vormde met Jespers, diens broer Oscar en een ander Antwerps schilder Paul Joostens 'de bond die wij zonder verzegeld papier gesloten hebben', een van de eerste modernistische groepen in België (Bron: Simonis-Buunk).
