Iittala - Alvar Aalto - Vase - Savoy - Dark Cobalt Blue - Glass - new in box

Alvar Aalto is the most famous Finnish architect and designer of the 20th century. One of his most enduring achievements was his work with the Finnish glass manufacturer Iittala. Since its inception in 1881, Iittala has had a central place in Finnish glassware design. Alvar Aalto's iconic Savoy vase has been called the most famous vase in the world. Aalto created the vase in different sizes and colours for the 1937 World Fair in Paris - it was named after Helsinki’s luxury Savoy Restaurant. The design for the first vases was said to be based on the the wavy form of the leather trousers traditionally worn by indigenous Sami women. The final legendary shape of the vase was further inspired by the waves of the Finnish lakes and landscapes - the design was revolutionary, and has been famous ever since. Each vase is mouth-blown at Iittala's glass factory in Finland. After 1957, the large vase was manufactured 160 mm high. The dark blue cobalt shade was in production from 1986 ti 2000, dating the time of manuacture of the vase being sold. This large vase has never been used - it is in mint condition in original box with brochure insert. It is pristine, without any damage. The vase is marked "Alvar Aalto" on the base (see photo #29) and the original red Iittala sticker is in place. The vase should be hand washed only. It can be used for flowers, or as an attractive bowl for fruit or just for decoration. This type of Savoy vase is now out of production, so this is a rare opportunity to acquire one of these fantastic pieces of Scandinavian art glasswork I always take great care packing (see reviews) and ships securely with insurance.
