Moses Mendelssohn (Transl.) - Set of Prophets and Writings [Or LeIsrael] - 1839

A magnificent set of Prophets and Writings (excluding the Five Megillot) “Or Le-Yisrael,” with Rashi's commentary and Ashkenazi translation by Moses Mendelssohn, supplemented with notes by Rabbi Raphael Bar-Yitzchak Pirshental. As part of this edition, the entire Bible was published, and we have before us a complete set of the Prophets and Writings only (without the Five Megillot). In the city of Kratchin, a Bible with a translation was printed in the same printing house, and after the rabbis saw that it contained words of heresy and “things invented from their hearts,” they appointed the aforementioned Rabbi Raphael, whom they trusted, to review the text and correct everything necessary. Several volumes bear the stamp of a German rabbi: Rabbi B. M. Auerbach, Charlottenburg. Rabbi Jacob Raphael Firstental [Firschenthal] (1781-1855): Born in Glogau, Silesia, and died in Breslau. Writer and translator, member of the German Enlightenment. Student of the gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger, z"l. Upon the death of his rabbi, he published the pamphlet “Avel Yachid” (A Single Mourner). He also published various other pamphlets and books on language, poetry, and periodicals. He also published books of selichot, supplications, and lamentations with translations. He translated into German and explained the books Moreh Nevuchim and Chovot HaLevavot, and authored additional books. Kratchin, 1839-1843. Printed by R. Dov Beer Manash [on the above printer, see: E. Pozner, The Manash Printing Press in Kratchin, Arashet, 1, pp. 261-264]. 13 volumes. Matching half-leather bindings and original colored cardboard boxes. Set height: 21.5 cm. Very fine condition. Library copies. Two volumes have slight tears on the spine. Minor tears on the boxes. Thick, high-quality, light-colored paper.
