Marcel van Hulst

An antique surgeon's amputation set in a brass bound polished wooden case with a brass plaque inscribed 'Stafford House Committee'. The Stafford House Committee gives provenance as it was a British voluntary aid organisation formed in late 1876 at Stafford House (now Lancaster House), London. Its main purpose was to organise and provide humanitarian relief for sick and wounded Turkish soldiers during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78. Chaired by the Duke of Sutherland, the Committee mobilised public support through donations and subscriptions, raising significant funds to purchase supplies including surgical instruments. The committee ceased their operations in 1879.

The case was made by F. Walters & Co' in London, whose plaque sits in the case, and contains instruments from a variety of makers including a set of seven ebony handled amputation knives one by Weiss, two by Arnold, & Sons, one by Walters & Co, two by Wood and one by Holborn, all well known and reputable makers of the time. Also included are a pair of bone forceps, another pair of forceps, an ebony handled scalpel by Watson & Sons, a steel scalpel, a pair of curve ended tweezers by Weiss, a pair of parrot beak scissors marked London, a skull saw by Down Bros London and a tortoiseshell lancet. The knives fit the case, the remainder of the instruments were probably added over time and likely not part of the original set.

F. Walters & Co. of London was a surgical instrument manufacturer active in the late 19th century. The company was established when F. Walters acquired the renowned business of John Millikin in 1871, renaming it “Millikin & Walters” before quickly trading as “F. Walters & Co. (successors to the late J. Millikin)” by 1873. The company continued to produce surgical instruments—often marked with the new name—at premises in Southwark Street, London.

The case measures 42 x 19.5 x 8cm, the longest knife is 38cm in length and the smallest 18.5cm.
