Narrative description
This outstanding samurai armor from the Late Edo period (1603–1868) represents a superb example of Japanese craftsmanship, combining martial presence with exquisite aesthetics. Its near-perfect condition makes it a highly valuable piece of historical and artistic significance, virtually ready for museum display.
The suji bachi kabuto (ridged helmet), lacquered in black, is crowned with a striking golden maedate in the form of a crescent moon with a trident, a powerful emblem of prestige and spiritual protection. The fukigaeshi bear gilded floral decorations on blue background, enriched with heraldic crests.
The full menpō (complete face mask), finished in black lacquer, conveys a fierce expression and is fitted with a tare of horizontal lacquered plates to protect the throat.
The dō (cuirass) is a tōsei gusoku construction with lacquered plates laced in deep navy silk accented with orange. The cords remain firm and vibrant, reflecting the high quality of the original materials.
Large sode (shoulder guards) and kote (armored sleeves) feature brocade silk interiors with vivid red floral patterns and gilded reinforcements.
The haidate (thigh protection) consists of lacquered lamellae with blue and orange lacing, while the suneate (shin guards) display green and red hexagonal decoration combined with lacquered plates and white bindings.
Gold ornaments and mon (family crests), including stylized flowers and chrysanthemums, emphasize the armor’s ceremonial and noble character.
With its remarkable preservation of lacquer, cords, and textile elements, this armor stands as a museum-grade piece, both in historical significance and aesthetic refinement.
