Description from the seller
Lot contains a rare edition.
Frontinus, Sextus Julius; Modius, François; Stewechius, Godescalcus; Schrijver, Pieter; Tennulius, Samuel; Oudendorp, Frans van (introductions) - S. Julius Frontinus's Four Books of Strategemata / With full notes by Francis Modius, Godescalci Stewechius, Petrus Schrijver, and Samuel Tennulius. Also included are, alongside P. Schrijverius, unpublished observations by other learned individuals. Edited by Francisco Oudendorp, who also added his own notes and various manuscript readings - Leiden, Lugdunum Batavorum, 1779 - [78], 570, [134] pages - bound in leather - 220 x 135mm - condition: very good, cover shows minor signs of use.
Sextus Julius Frontinus (born 103) was a Roman senator, soldier, and writer. The Strategematicon libri III is a collection of military lists (war tactics) from Greek and Roman history, intended for use by officers. A fourth book, whose layout and style differ from the rest (for example, placing more emphasis on the moral aspects of war), was once considered the work of a different author but is now recognized as an authentic work by Frontinus. This work, which was lost for more than 1300 years, was rediscovered in the 15th century by Italian humanists.
