The insect is rendered with delicate detail, from its long antennae to the textured wings and slender legs, showing the precision of Japanese metalwork. The underside of the insect bears the artist’s signature, and the accompanying wooden storage box is also signed by Hidekuni. Such works were often created as bonsai or bonkei accessories, serving as naturalistic accents that capture the atmosphere of seasonal landscapes. In Japanese tradition, autumn insects such as the katydid are appreciated for their distinctive songs, evoking the atmosphere of autumn evenings. This sculpture reflects that cultural sentiment while also standing as a collectible work of Showa-period craftsmanship.
