Powerfull wooden elephant animal mask from the Ibo tribe of Nigeria.
This mask is an Obgodo (elephant spirit), carved by the Igbo-Izi people who live in the north-eastern part of the IGBO territory in Nigeria. Note the tusks and the trunk on the front and the loose head on the back. It was mostly worn and exposed in an horizontal way.
Impressive hard wooden maskwith a great patina. Good condition with traces of tribal use. Great color silhouette with use of grey and orange kaoliën.
Provenance: former private collection from the Netherlands
