Photographer Yutaka Maruyama's photobook ‘Polaroid Eros 1993-1996’. Born in Tokyo in 1956, Maruyama began working freelance after graduating from Tokyo College of Photography. Since then, he has produced numerous commercial works, gravure photography, and photo books (including those featuring Tomomi Eguchi). In 1997, he released ‘Backs’, a series featuring women's buttocks as its motif. That work was also entirely Polaroid, with all models being amateurs. This present work similarly consists of Polaroid photos featuring amateur models. At the time, Araki commented, “Nowadays, if it's not Polaroid, it's not photography.” Many Polaroid works were released during this era. Polaroid, with its unique quality of being an original in a single print, something digital cannot achieve. This is a collection of works created with an obsession to leave just one beautiful image in this world. The editing, incorporating close-ups, is also excellent.
