Daniel Noble (1810–1885) - The Brain and Its Physiology – A Critical Disquisition on the Relations Between the Structure and - 1846
First edition (1846) of The Brain and Its Physiology by Daniel Noble, an early pioneer in British psychiatry and neurological science.
This important work bridges early physiological theories of the mind and modern brain anatomy, rejecting phrenology and promoting empirical neurophysiology.
This copy bears significant provenance:
Inscribed “From the Author” on the front endpaper – a likely author presentation copy.
Bookplate: “Presented from the Library of the late Professor G. M. Robertson, 1882.”
Professor George M. Robertson (1864–1938) was a distinguished Scottish psychiatrist and Superintendent at the Royal Edinburgh Asylum.
Bookseller’s label: Robert Seton, Foreign & British Bookseller, Head of the Mound, Edinburgh.
Binding in original embossed cloth, with blind-stamped ornamentation. Spine with gilt title “On the Brain.”
The spine shows losses at head and tail and some paper detachment; both boards display abrasion and surface loss, as visible in the photographs. The structure remains sound and pages are complete and firmly attached.
Text block with mild foxing and age toning typical for the period, but internally clean and legible throughout.
A scarce first edition of lasting scholarly importance — and an especially interesting association copy linking two figures in 19th-century mental science.
