- Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was a Latvian-born American painter who became one of the central figures of Abstract Expressionism and a pioneer of the Color Field movement. His mature works, created from the late 1940s onward, are characterized by large, luminous rectangles of color that seem to float against softly hued backgrounds. Rothko sought not to depict objects or stories but to evoke deep emotional and spiritual experiences through pure color and light.

Rothko’s art is often associated with contemplation and transcendence. He believed that painting could express fundamental human emotions tragedy, ecstasy, and the sublime without the use of figurative elements. His compositions, though simple in structure, invite an almost meditative engagement from the viewer, who is drawn into the silent dialogue between the color fields.

In the art market, Rothko’s works are among the most highly valued of the 20th century. His paintings regularly achieve record-breaking prices at major auctions, with several selling for over $80 million USD. Collectors and institutions worldwide continue to seek his works for their emotional depth and historical significance, making Rothko a cornerstone of modern art collections.

Blue and Grey (1962) represents a later phase in Rothko’s career, marked by a shift toward darker, more subdued tones that reflected his increasingly introspective state of mind. The composition features two softly defined color fields: a pale, misty gray hovering above a deep indigo-blue band. The blurred edges and delicate transitions between the tones create a sense of stillness and quiet melancholy.

Unlike the vibrant reds and oranges of his earlier works, Blue and Grey evokes a somber, contemplative atmosphere. The restrained palette and subtle layering of pigment suggest depth and emotion through simplicity, embodying Rothko’s conviction that color itself could communicate the most profound human feelings.
