Deze zeldzame litho maakt deel uit van de serie L'Odyssée. Van deze serie zijn slechts 30 exemplaren handgesigneerd door de kunstenaar. Het portfolio L'Odyssée bestaat uit 42 unieke afbeeldingen. Het betreft hier het werk Les lamentation d'Ulysse, dat genoteerd staat in het Mourlot Catalogue Raisonné van Chagalls lithografische werken.

Marc Chagall is een van de grootste meesters van de 20e eeuw, wiens werk een blijvende invloed had op de kunstwereld. Een unieke verhalenverteller met een ongelooflijke creatieve kracht - een schilderende dichter.

De oorsprong van zijn creaties ligt in de religieuze ervaringen uit zijn jeugd, oude mythen en legenden. Zijn favoriete wezens zijn betoverde en dromerige verliefde figuren, gewichtloos en verwijderd van de werkelijkheid. De lichte, open taal van de tekens en het delicate zweven van de beeldende motieven ontwikkelen een charmante taal van de fantasie. De toeschouwer wordt overweldigd door de harmonie van het thema en de poëtische schoonheid van de kleuren.

Marc Chagall beschrijft zijn schilderkunst als het "gelukkige visioen van een wenselijke wereld" en ziet het als een tegenbeeld van de werkelijkheid.
