The Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation; The Opening of the 5th & 6th Seals - 1496

Good impression on ivory paper. The present example, dating back to the 19th century, is one of the countless engravings taken in every era from Dürer's original. The opening of the fifth and sixth seals; above, an angel dispenses white robes to the martyrs, and underneath, a shower of flaming stars falls on the innocent on the left and the guilty on the right, One of 15 illustrations of the 1498 German edition. c.1496-7 A vision (Rev. 6:9-12) of the martyrs of Roman persecution `underneath the altar' and awaiting their vindication accompanied the breaking of the fifth seal. Each was given a white robe. (The robes, distributed by an angel, are being donned.) The breaking of the sixth seal (Rev. 6:12-17) brought the day of wrath: the sun turned black, the moon red as blood, the stars fell, mountains and islands moved. (Stars rain from heaven upon pope, emperor and common folk on the earth below.) Woodcut (British Museum) This print is one of 15 woodcuts by Dürer that depicted scenes of the Apocalypse as described by John the Apostle in the Book of Revelations of the New Testament in the Bible (Revelations 9:13-21).
