Jarrón en marfil. Obra de exquisita ejecución, combinando la técnica Shibayama y la técnica "shishiai togidashi maki-e", características de finales del periodo Edo.

La pieza aparece decorada con grullas y crisantemos.

En el pensamiento shintoísta y budista la grulla (tsuru, 鶴) se asocia con el alma que asciende después de la muerte, motivo por el cual se usa en rituales funerarios o en deseos de paz eterna. 

El crisantemo (kiku, 菊) representa la iluminación, con sus múltiples pétalos irradiando desde un centro —metáfora del despertar espiritual. Su forma ordenada y simétrica encajaba con el ideal Edo de armonía y control interno.

Puede observarse cómo las ramas ascienden por el jarrón adentrándose en su interior, al igual que el alma asciende después de la muerte.

Este jarrón formaba parte de un tokonoma (床の間) —el nicho de exhibición situado en interiores de residencias samurái o de la élite urbana (chōnin).

Se trata de una pieza que se sitúa en la transición del período Edo al periodo Meiji, combinando un fuerte sentido simbólico y moral con una ejecución naturalista narrativa y ornamental.

Del tokonoma de un samurai o de un chōnin al salón de tu casa.
