Diego de Saavedra Faxardo [Diego de Saavedra Fajardo] - Idea de un principe politico, y Christiano, representada en cien empressas. Por D. Diego Saavedra - 1695-1695

Idea de un principe politico, y Christiano, representada en cien empressas. Por D. Diego Saavedra Faxardo - Diego de Saavedra Faxardo [Diego de Saavedra Fajardo] Valencia: Vicente Cabrera, 1695. [xi], 693 pages. 20cm x 14cm. Newer quarter leather binding with blue boards, gilt decorated and lettered spine, red edges, and marbled endpapers. Later edition of this anti-Machiavellian emblem book which was first published in 1640. It contains a hundred short essays about the education of a prince. Each essay starts with a beautiful wood engraved emblem vignette. There are also some nice tailpiece engravings throughout. Only slight rubbing, bumping, and wear to the boards and spine. Pencil markings in the first front flyleaf. Pen markings in the title page and long written text on its verso. Pen markings on page 240. Pages 321/322 and 471/472 have the bottom edge torn off, which does affect the text in the borders a bit (see photos). Pages 432/433 seem to have been torn and are now mended (see photos). Page 299/300 has a small hole in the top. The page numbering indicates that pages 241 and 242 are missing, but the text is continuous and after checking other sources, it is clear that this is only a pagination error, and no text is missing. Some browning, spotting and water staining throughout as usual. The text and illustrations are bright, and the binding is solid. Overall, a nice copy in good condition.
