Bronze Mortar with Winged Handles – 17th Century
In Excellent Condition – No Reserve

Heavy and beautifully patinated bronze mortar featuring wing-shaped handles in high-relief design. A superb example of early European craftsmanship, likely Italian or Spanish, dating from the 17th century.

Dimensions: h 11.5 x Ø 14 cm with wings (mouth Ø 11 cm)
Weight: 1.95 kg
Condition: Great original condition with aged patina and traces of oxidation consistent with age. Please see the photo's for further details.

Provenance: Private collection, Europe.
This type of mortar was used for grinding herbs, spices, and medicinal ingredients during the Baroque period. The bold, winged handles were not only decorative but functional, allowing for a firm grip.

Today, it serves as a museum-quality decorative piece—a true artifact from the early modern era.

Historical context:
Bronze mortars were essential domestic and apothecary tools across Europe from the 16th to 18th centuries. Their design evolved from simple utilitarian forms to richly ornamented vessels, often symbolizing wealth and learning. Winged motifs were particularly popular in Italian and Spanish designs, reflecting Renaissance influences of power and movement.
