Emblemas morales de Don Iuan de Horozco y Couarruuias, Arcediano de Cuellar en la Santa Iglesia de Segouia. 3 volumes bound in one complete - Don Iuan de Horozco y Couarruuias [Juan de Horozco y Covarrubias]
Caragoça [Saragossa]: Alonso Rodriguez, 1603-1604. Two volumes: Vol I: 88 leaves, Vol II: [7], 100 leaves, Vol III: 102-201 leaves, [16]. 19cm x 13cm. Newer full maroon-coloured leather binding with gilt decorated boards, gilt decorated and lettered spine, and marbled endpapers. Comes with a protective mylar cover. Early edition of the first emblem book printed in Spain (first published in 1589), compiled by Spanish writer and later bishop of Agrigento and Guadix, Juan Horozco y Covarrubias (c.1540-1610). The work is structured in three parts; the first explains the concept of emblems and devices, their use, history and significance, and serves as an introduction to the following two illustrated parts which each contain 50 emblems. Beautifully illustrated with an engraved title vignette, 100 full-page emblem woodcuts, as well as engraved initials and tailpieces.
Slight rubbing, bumping, and wear to the boards and spine. Pencil markings on the front flyleaves and pen inscriptions on the title page. Some pages had some tears that were fixed, for example on leaves 113-116, 125-129, and 135-136 (see photos). Some browning and spotting throughout. The text and illustrations are clear, and the binding is tight. Considering its age, a handsome copy in very good condition.
