Daunian Ceramic Askos - 30 cm

Monumental Terracotta Askos Culture: Daunian Date: 4th–3rd century B.C. Description: An imposing terracotta askos of exceptional size (height approx. 30 cm), a rare and highly sought-after format. The globular body, flaring neck, and high arched handle strengthened by plastic knobs give it a sculptural presence. A distinctive feature is the partially closed interior of the mouth, an original element suggesting a ritual or votive function rather than utilitarian use. Its surface preserves an evocative earthen patina with calcareous deposits, bearing witness to its ancient burial. Comparable to examples in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and similar pieces sold on the international market, this askos stands out as a rare type for both size and preservation. A statement piece for any collection of Mediterranean antiquities. Condition: Intact, with minor rim chips and stable ancient cracks. Original patina preserved. Provenance: German private Collection 1970
