L’ametista, varietà viola di quarzo, è una gemma dalle origini leggendarie e molto antiche che attrae da sempre ammirazione ed attenzione per via della sua bellezza e dei “poteri” ad essa associati. Già nel 3.000 a. C si registrava un ampio uso di ametiste per la creazione di gioielli in Mesopotamia e soprattutto in Egitto. Proprio in quest’ultima località infatti l’ametista è sempre stata considerata una gemma reale e in grado di rafforzare il potere, inoltre lo stesso colore porpora-violaceo era simbolo di sovranità; per questo l’ametista venne utilizzata nel sigillo della celeberrima e potentissima regina Cleopatra, nonché nei gioielli di faraoni successivi.
La regalità e la potenza dall’ametista scaturiscono inoltre alle sue origini, in qualche modo divine. Il suo nome infatti deriva dal greco améthystos che significa “non ebbro” ed è altamente evocativo e simbolico in quanto rivela la creazione mitologica di questa pietra preziosa.
