Card with Image Hero of the Soviet Union ALEXANDER MIKHAILOVICH RODITELEV (1916-1966) During the battle for Königsberg in April 1945, Junior Lieutenant Roditelev, commander of a sapper platoon, served as part of an assault group with eight sappers. With a swift assault, the assault group reached the enemy artillery positions. Wasting no time, Roditelev ordered an attack on the artillerymen. In the ensuing hand-to-hand combat, he personally killed six Nazis. Unable to withstand the onslaught of the Soviet fighters, 25 German soldiers surrendered, the rest fled, leaving behind 15 heavy guns. A few minutes later, the Nazis attempted to recapture the abandoned guns. The sappers repelled three counterattacks and held the artillery positions until the main forces arrived. In this battle, a group of sappers under the command of Roditelev killed up to 40 Nazis and captured 15 serviceable heavy guns. The next day, April 8, Roditelev and twelve sappers blew up an enemy pillbox, cleared six city blocks of Nazis, and captured up to 200 soldiers and officers. For his courage and bravery in battles with the Nazis, A. M. Roditelev was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
