Miguel Berrocal (1933-2006) - Sculpture, Menina - 35 cm - Bronze - 1972

This sculpture, La Menina II (Opus 117), was created between 1972 and 1973 by renowned Spanish sculptor Miguel Ortiz Berrocal (1933–2006). It serves as a tribute to the celebrated Spanish poet Rafael Alberti, and is part of Berrocal’s ongoing investigation into the fusion of art, mathematics, and engineering. Composed of 23 interlocking bronze elements, the sculpture is not merely an aesthetic object but an intellectual puzzle, inviting the viewer to explore its hidden interior. Polished bronze with a golden patina. Berrocal’s practice places him among the great experimental sculptors of the 20th century. His oeuvre intersects with the kinetic and constructivist movements and dialogues with contemporaries such as Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Pablo Serrano, Eduardo Chillida, Alberto Giacometti, Naum Gabo, Antoine Pevsner, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Lynn Chadwick, Lucio Fontana, and César Baldaccini. A mathematician and architect by training, Berrocal's genius lies in translating complex spatial and mechanical ideas into elegant sculptural forms. He was not only a sculptor but also a technical innovator, founding his own foundry and collaborating with a network of craftsmen to realize his modular works. This piece is a fine example of Berrocal’s signature method: sculptures that can be taken apart and reassembled like three-dimensional puzzles—blurring the boundary between art and object, vision and manipulation. Can not be shipped out of European Union. Condition: Very good condition. The sculpture features a rich, shiny golden patina with light age-related wear. Some surface scratches and minor rubbing to the base consistent with age and handling. All mechanical elements are intact.
