Zena Chiara Masud

An illuminated Arabic religious manuscript from a damaged book of prayers, similar in style to a manuscript of Al-Jazuli's Dala'il al-Kharyat form sub-Sharan Africa. The text is arabic, most likely Rayhani script with its notable flattening of the sub-linear, curves pointing almost horizontally left and characteristics in common with Thuluth and Muhaqqaq. The diactricals (devotional marking in red providing guidance to the reader) are written in a much finer pen than the characters of the main script which is also common to Rayhani manuscripts. 

The text reads from the top:
- My Lord
- I ask you by Allah, O Allah, O Allah, O Living, O Sustainer of all existence, o possessor of majesty and honour. There is no God but you. Glory be to you. I have been one of the wrongdoers
- I ask you. 

The illuminated panel in gold and red is typical of the decoration applied to these sub-Sharan prayer books.
