Two open-drop anaesthetic masks used for administering ether, chloroform, or other volatile anaesthetic agents during surgery. The larger example is a Schimmelbusch mask, invented by Curt Schimmelbusch in 1889. Its metal frame and crossbars were designed to hold a piece of gauze, onto which the liquid anaesthetic (typically ether or chloroform) would be dripped. 

The smaller is a child's mask, a wire mesh “Yankauer” type mask, popular from about 1904 onwards. Sidney Yankauer introduced the wire-mesh design to improve both patient comfort and evenness of anaesthetic delivery. 

These masks date from the early to mid 20th century.
