The Bershaw Folding Oak Book Rest – England, early 20th century

Handcrafted oak adjustable book rest marked “The Bershaw Patent – Made in England.” Designed for reading in bed or the bath, this model features a rotating wooden frame with cut-out geometric panels and a central metal support arm. The piece folds flat for storage and extends to a full width of 92 cm.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition with minor surface wear consistent with age. Mechanism functional and stable. Original patina and maker’s label preserved.

Value basis: The Bershaw patent book rests were produced in limited quantities in England circa 1920–1930 and are recognized examples of early ergonomic design combining domestic functionality with Arts & Crafts styling. Their oak construction and folding mechanics make them collectible among design historians and vintage reading accessory collectors.
