Oliver Goldsmith - Earth and Animated Nature - 1890

An early edition of Oliver Goldsmith’s celebrated natural history work, Earth and Animated Nature, here presented in multiple divisions, likely dating from around 1890 (undated, estimated based on comparable editions). This expansive and richly illustrated work reflects Goldsmith’s enduring contribution to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century natural history, blending scientific observation with elegant prose. This collection comprises Divisions II, III, IV, V and VI, with Divisions II and III appearing to form part of the first volume, and Division IV marking the beginning of the second. There are two variant title pages for both volumes bound at the end of Division VI. The plates throughout are bound erratically, not in strict chronological sequence. Rubbing to the covers, strong foxing and discoloration throughout, and completely worn hinges in Divisions II, III, and VI. One corner of one page is detached. The set retains its period charm and offers a tangible glimpse into the Victorian fascination with nature and the physical sciences.
