This mask, carved from dense wood, is remarkably stylized and minimalistic in its features. Simple lines and curved forms emphasize the expressive nature of the mask. The mask’s rich volume is skillfully highlighted by varying levels and protrusions, creating a surprising dynamism and rhythm in the face. The oval-shaped face is carved into a smooth, vertical surface with a rounded forehead. The impressive triangular nose connects with angular ridges, forming a smooth transition between the different depth levels of the face, emphasizing and defining the lower part of the face, which first slopes inward and then flattens out. The tubular eyes and mouth protrude from the face, and mouth reveals distinguishable lips and teeth. The base color of the mask is dark brown, but there are also traces of white kaolin clay. An old travel tag is attached to the back of the mask. A custom-made stand is included in the price.

The Ijaw people (also known as Ijo and, in their language, Izon) live in the Niger Delta in Nigeria and number approximately four million. The Ijaw are known in the delta region as skilled fishermen, navigators, and traders, and they are considered one of the longest-inhabiting ethnic groups in Nigeria. While the majority of Ijaw today identify as Christians, they also practice their traditional religion alongside Christianity. This head crest mask represents Owuamapu, a type of water spirit that plays a central role among the traditional deities of the Ijaw. Owuamapu are believed to be human-like spirits, and it is thought that people live among them before being born into this world. Prayers are offered to seek the protection of Owuamapu to ensure success in the earthly life. To maintain the favor of the Owuamapu, annual festivals lasting several days are held, where men initiated into the Sekiapu secret society dance with the masks on their heads.
