Marcel van Hulst

A cased antique surgical set by Hilliard in Edinburgh dating from the latter part of the 19th century (c. 1850–1890). The set includes five bone handled scalpels, (one missing), scissors, retractor, and cannula; the retractor is the chain with two hooks, the hooks were used to hold back flesh after an incision to allow the surgeon to work, the cannula was inserted into a cavity and then the internal rod removed to allow fluid to escape. The scalpels and scissors are marked with the makers name. The case is French polished and the cartouche engraved 'George E. Wilson'.

Robert Harvey Hilliard worked as a surgical instrument maker in Edinburgh from at least 1832, having originated from Sheffield.​ The main workshop was located at 7 Nicolson Street. Hilliard was listed in trade directories as "Cutler & Surgical Instrument Maker to the Queen" from 1850 onward. He was later joined by his son, forming H. Hilliard & Son, with operations continuing into the early 20th century.​ The firm was contemporary with other prominent Scottish makers, collaborating with local surgeons and supplying innovations for the medical field.

Hilliard’s products were highly regarded for their fine steelwork and comprehensive instrument sets. The company supplied many Scottish hospitals and institutions and was considered an authority on surgical steel goods.​

The case measures 17 x 7cm (6.7" x 2.75").
