De Praxis Medica bevat de commentaren van Boerhaave op zijn Aphorismi de cognoscendis et curandis morbis. (1748). In 1709 publiceerde Boerhaave de Aphorismen, korte uitspraken over de herkenning en behandeling van ziekten. Vanaf 1718 besprak Boerhaave de Aphorismen uitvoerig in zijn Praxis Medica sive Commentarium in Aphorismos. Hij volgde daarin zijn geneeskunde colleges. Deze colleges aan de universiteit van Leiden trokken studenten uit heel Europa.. Van de Praxis Medica verschenen meerdere edities. In deze band zijn deel I en deel II (van totaal IV) van de editio quarta uit 1748 samen gebonden. De verschillende delen hebben een uitvoerige zelfstandige index en kunnen daarom separaat gelezen en gebruikt worden.
De teksten van Pars Prima (648 pag.) en pars Secunda (400 pag.) zijn compleet in uitstekende staat en gebonden in de oorspronkelijke perkament band met onbeschadigde binding. Bijzonder is het portret van Boerhaave op de rug van het boek. Het betreft een gravure van N.Dupuis naar een geschilderd portret van Boerhaave door Jan Wandelaar .
