Marcel van Hulst

A rare and authentic Japanese military brass bugle (信号ラッパ / shingō rappa), produced by Yamato, one of Japan’s earliest instrument manufacturers specializing in military and ceremonial horns.
This model was used by the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy during the early to mid-20th century for signaling commands such as reveille, assembly, and charge orders.

Description

Maker: Yamato (ヤマト) – hallmark engraved on the bell

Material: Brass

Design: Double-loop tube (“two-coil type”)

Dimensions: Approx. 31 cm (length) × 11.5 cm (width)

Weight: Approx. 500 g

Condition: Original vintage condition with surface patina, oxidation, and age-related marks.
No dents compromising the sound structure. Functional and capable of producing sound (tested).
Mouthpiece included (sanitized).

This double-loop type produces a higher pitch than the three-loop version,
and is believed to have been used by naval units—the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force still uses this form today.
Unlike modern trumpets, this bugle lacks valves and was designed exclusively for command signaling (wake-up, lights-out, alerts, etc.), not for musical performance.

A piece of Japanese military and musical history—ideal for WWII collectors, brass instrument enthusiasts, or museum display.
